Hall of Fame Co-Chair Ruby H. Melton and a laptop scholarship recipient share a message and bring their voices to address this challenge:

“A laptop is a very tangible way we can make a difference in the lives of our Gateway students during a very difficult time. The COVID-19 pandemic has upended their semesters and, as much as possible, we want to make sure it doesn’t upend their studies or their educational goals.”

“ I am writing this letter to express my thanks and appreciation for selecting me as a recipient of the Laptop Scholarship for Gateway Community College. It will provide the technology needed to access my courses, prepare/edit assignments, and join in virtual classrooms and meetings.”

Early Childhood Education

"Receiving a portable computer from the Gateway Foundation has been an unexpected blessing.  When my family and I first came to New Haven, each day felt like a struggle to stay above water, but I never forgot my goal to become an Early Education teacher.  I am laser-focused on this goal, and I have been working very hard in order to accomplish it. Hard work does pay; I am proof of this.  The computer has helped me stay focused on accomplishing this goal. In my life, once I set my eyes on a goal, I will do anything and everything to reach that goal.  With the Foundation’s help, I am one step closer to achieving it."

Engineering Science

“I grew up fascinated by life and art, observing all aspects I could interact with. Eventually, my love for art allowed me to learn anatomy and physiology and I pursued a B.S. in Exercise Science. Then, I worked in the medical field for 5 years and during that time I started to think about alternative ways for people to express their care for each other through the art of engineering. This led me to pursue an opportunity in furthering my education  in engineering and the laptop scholarship has helped me to do just that, thank you."

Our scholars thank you for your donations!

"This scholarship is important to me because it will help me take a step further in my studies. I will not have to borrow a laptop anymore, in order to get homework done. After graduating, I will choose between working at Yale-New Haven Hospital or Haiti, my home country."

"Receiving this scholarship lifts a heavy burden, and greatly assists in my ability to complete my homework… it lessens the stress levels of being a student…  Receiving this scholarship has greatly impacted my life, and I can confidently say that I will not let you down, by taking the responsibility of being a productive student, thank you again!"

"This laptop scholarship will help me lower my book costs as I will be able to buy the digital book rather the used hard copy. This will also allow me to concentrate better as I can take my studies to the library rather than have to try to work in my noisy apartment complex."

"I always wanted my own personal laptop and have been saving up to get one around black Friday but thankfully with this award I can put the money to paying my tuition… Again, I sincerely want to thank all those who were involved who made this possible, thank you from the bottom of my heart and also thank you for choosing me for this award."

"Thanks to this donation, this scholarship will help reduce the cost of my tuition given my immense medical expenses due to my chronic illness. I am currently a sophomore pursuing the Ultrasound major at Gateway. I would like to specialize in OB/GYN sonography as I am interested in this prenatal care and working with mothers-to-be."
